Dave McAfee is confident that he was "born to be a musician, particularly a drummer." Live music of all varieties drew in young Dave, from marching bands to country festival music. His father was in the Army, so Dave McAfee attended many schools. Fortunately, he found inspirational teachers at nearly every school. Dave McAfee performed in school bands in the third grade and was overwhelmed by the support and encouragement from teachers and classmates. During junior high, Dave McAfee played in the concert band and in high school he participated in the marching band and boys club dances.
Dave McAfee's father loved country music and always listened to it with Dave in the car. Since then, Dave McAfee loved country music and even while in high school and college (Ohio University) in Ohio, he yearned for country. After college, Dave McAfee returned to Oklahoma, where he lived as an infant, and became a professional musician. Dave McAfee moved to Nashville, hoping to be one of the many great drummers performing in Tennessee. Hard work and constant networking helped Dave land one job after the next.
As a member of the professional drumming world for more than twenty years, Dave McAfee is an authority on staying power. Dave emphasizes developing a real feel for music; "a good drummer has to play the whole arrangement musically." Dave McAfee advises young drummers to think of the feel of the whole song, and "focus on enhancing without disrupting."
Currently, Dave McAfee is on tour with country music powerhouse Toby Keith. Dave McAfee says that he hardest thing about their high-energy performances is the constant touring. Despite this, Dave McAfee said in an interview with Aquarian Drumheads, "I am happiest when I am playing drums. I feel like the luckiest guy in the world that I have gotten to spend almost 20 years drumming for a living! My golf game has gone to hell, but I can live with that."
Dave McAfee and longtime friend Dave Smith created DMac Production in Mount Joliet, Tennessee. The recording studio specializes in indie projects. Dave and Smith recently collaborated on the project 62West.
Someday Dave McAfee hoped to give up touring altogether and settle into a stable life as an A list session drummer in the capital of country music, Nashville, Tennessee.
Dave McAfee has also performed with Wade Hayes, Bryan White, Pearl River, Woody Lee, Lindsey Haun, Scotty Emerick, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sammy Hagar, David Allen Coe, Trent Tomlinson, Rascal Flatts, Mel McDaniel, Melanie Martel, Kevin Sharp, Ted Nugent, Steve Wariner, Glen Campbell, and Terri Clark.
